US Navy Disruptive Technologies Lab

Unmanned semi-submersible

Maribotics in collaboration with Saab Unmanned Systems, Intercept Boat Corporation and The Disruptive Technologies Lab at U.S.Navy Carderock Division, recently developed a low-cost highly innovative unmanned semi-submersible vehicle.  This vehicle was developed partly in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of highly innovative teams operating on a shoestring budget employing materials on hand.  As a demonstration of true “disruptive technology”, the hull was formed from a 3D printed vessel, outfitted with twin outboards and a ballast system.

The purpose of this exercise was to demonstrate capabilities suitable for operators functioning under low-budget and limited resources with an explicit requirement for fielding functional unmanned marine vehicles rapidly.  Maribotics was responsible for developing and operating the remote piloting and unmanned operation capability.  This was accomplished at a fraction of the cost of typical U.S.Navy funded programs with similar scope.  The vehicle was demonstrated in waters off the coast of Massachusetts in early summer of 2023.

Rapid and Affordable

The DTL/SAAB/IBC/Maribotics semi-submersible project put the “disruptive” into the “Disruptive Technology Lab" by delivering a complete system for a fraction of the cost of any traditional DoD program with similar objectives. This team, working on a shoestring budget delivered a fully functional semi-submersible vehicle that performed in-water to customer expectations on the first deployment.
